Fire extinguishers should be an integral part of every premises. It’s important to understand the different fire extinguisher types when you are considering the kind of extinguisher you need for your home.

The most common fire extinguisher classifications are A, B, C, and K.

  • Class A: Solid combustibles that are not metals, like wood, paper, cloth, plastics, and rubber.
  • Class B: Flammable liquids, like petrol, oil, grease, and paints.
  • Class C: Electrical equipment, like appliances and outlets.
  • Class K: Cooking oils and greases, animal fats, and vegetable fats.

Smoke alarms and detectors are vital to any complete alarm system. A smoke detector can detect and signal the presence of smoke in the air. This will alert you to the risk of fire in your home or business premises.  It’s important to have multiple smoke alarms placed throughout the premises.

Tips when considering smoke detector placement;

  • make sure a person anywhere within the house or business can hear a smoke alarm when the detection system is triggered. If your premise has large rooms and long hallways, you’ll want to install more alarms than you would if you had a small premises.
  • place a detector on every level of your premises. This includes attics and basements.
  • in the home – place a detector in every bedroom. Detectors should be installed in every sleep room, as well as outside of the rooms in the hallways.
  • At stairways – place a detector at the bottom of staircases leading from one floor to the next.
  • Kitchen –  a smoke detector and a heat detector is advisable but needs to be strategically placed so as to avoid false alarms.
